Prophet's Mosque Umbrellas This was a Speedwave/SL GmbH Germany project where Speedwave was responsible for the composite claddings for the Prophet’s Mosque umbrellas. Made from white teflon membranes they provide a convertible shade roof for the 2 main courtyards. In summer the open umbrellas provide shade during the day, with the white teflon membrane reflecting much of the radiant energy. At night, in closed position, they allow the heated surfaces to radiate large quantities of energy to the cold night sky. In winter, when average temperatures are relatively low, the umbrellas are opened at night to prevent extreme cooling of the building and during the day the umbrellas are closed to allow the mild winter sun to warm it. |
