Medinah Haram Piazza Shading Project

Premier Composite Technologies is commissioned to build the external claddings (covered with mosaic tiles), for 182 foldable umbrellas for the Madinah Haram Piazza. These umbrellas not only provide a convertible roof that shelters the piazza from the elements but will also improve climatic conditions of the piazza.

Installed in an overlapping scheme, the umbrellas shelter a total area of approximately 106,000 m². The single open stretched umbrella structure spans an approx. area of 615 m². In closed position, the arms cover the membrane while additional claddings on top of the arms form a prismatic casing to protect the folded membrane.

The arm claddings and cladding attachments will be of a lightweight composite sandwich structure of carbon-glass fibre epoxy resin laminate, and  will provide high torsional stiffness that are fixed to the flexible umbrella arm systems. Claddings and attachments have to carry all forces from wind, from the deflection of the umbrella structure, and from the erection process.
